Humorists Hugo Sousa, Gilmário Vemba, and Murilo Couto faced an unexpected hurdle when they were detained at Maputo Airport and denied entry into Mozambique. The trio, set to perform a comedy show, were allegedly subjected to "inhumane treatment" due to visa discrepancies.
Gilmário Vemba, an Angolan comedian, openly criticized the airport's conditions, stating it lacked the basic facilities to accommodate people. The comedians were forced to sleep on the floor, a situation Vemba described as unacceptable.
The incident has sparked a debate over the visa requirements for cultural activities in Mozambique. While the Mozambican immigration service cited the lack of a proper cultural activity visa as the reason for the denial, the comedians argued they were unaware of such requirements, having performed in the country under similar circumstances before without issues.
Political undertones have also emerged, with some suggesting the denial was politically motivated. Vemba, known to support Mozambican politician Venâncio Mondlane, hinted at possible political reasons behind their treatment, though he stopped short of making direct accusations.
The comedians have expressed their disappointment and reluctance to return to Mozambique unless guarantees are made to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. Their experience highlights the challenges artists face when navigating international travel for performances.
