Monstrare Returns to Loulé in 2025

The Monstrare – International Social Cinema Showcase is set to return from January 18 to 25, 2025, in LoulĂ© for its 11th edition. This year, it will be part of the Algarve Film Week, focusing on the current global transition. The event features a collection of documentaries, shorts, and feature films, alongside workshops, talks, industry-focused moments, and a program from the MotelX festival. The initiative is organized by the LoulĂ© City Council and entry is free.

Monstrare - International Social Cinema Showcase

Event Highlights

  • Opening Ceremony: The festival kicks off at the AuditĂłrio Solar da MĂșsica Nova on January 18 at 5 PM with the Audiovisual Support Program presentation, followed by a performance at 6 PM.
  • Family Screening: On January 19, enjoy a family-friendly film “Robot Dreams – Unlikely Friends”, directed by Pablo Berger, depicting the friendship between a dog and a robot in 1980s New York.
  • MotelX Collaboration: The festival invites the Lisbon-based MotelX festival, dedicated to horror films, to present two special days. On January 20, watch the award-winning animated film “Flow” and the new paranormal horror film “Oddity” by Damian McCarthy.
  • Special Screenings: The program includes a variety of films such as “A Rapariga Que Caminhava Sobre a Neve” by Bruno Carnide and “Noites Claras” by Paulo Filipe Monteiro.
  • Documentary Feature: The documentary “Nuclear Energy Now!” by Oliver Stone will address misconceptions about low-level radiation and nuclear energy on January 23.
  • Closing Film: The festival concludes on January 25 with “Lindo” by Margarida Gramaxo, following a turtle hunter's journey to protect the species.

Workshops and Networking

The Algarve Film Week will also feature several cinema-related initiatives, including a workshop on “Application and Financing for Cinema” led by Bernardo Lopes on January 22 and 23. Additionally, a networking event for industry professionals will take place at the Cineteatro Louletano.

Cinetendinha Awards

The Cinetendinha Awards, organized by journalist and film critic Rui Pedro Tendinha, will honor the best films and performances on January 25 at the Cineteatro Louletano.

The Monstrare is an initiative of the Loulé City Council, supported by the ICA, the National Cinema Plan, and the Cineteatro Louletano.
