The Portuguese Air Force has enhanced its emergency medical transport capabilities by adding another helicopter to its fleet, operational around the clock. This brings the total to four aircraft dedicated to this critical mission. The newly operational UH-60 Black Hawk joins the existing fleet, which includes another helicopter and two airplanes, significantly improving response times for medical emergencies.
Defense Minister Nuno Melo highlighted the Air Force's commitment, stating that their involvement is not driven by business or interest but by a sense of duty. However, he pointed out challenges, such as some military helicopters being unable to land at hospital heliports, attributing this to infrastructure limitations that need addressing for future emergency preparedness.
Melo also dismissed claims of a five-hour delay in transporting a patient with a head injury, emphasizing the Air Force's efficiency and the critical role it plays in emergency medical services. The Air Force has been ensuring emergency medical transport since July 1, stepping in until the contracted company, Gulf Med, is fully operational.
The expansion includes a second helicopter in Ovar, now available 24/7, complementing the existing assets in Beja and Montijo. This move underscores the government's focus on strengthening emergency response mechanisms across Portugal.
