Two PSP officers from the Rato police station in Lisbon have been detained following the emergence of a video showing severe acts of violence against a detainee. The footage, captured on a mobile phone, was brought to the attention of the officers' superiors, leading to an immediate investigation.
The video reveals disturbing scenes inside the Rato police station, where the two officers are seen brutally assaulting a civilian who was brought in on suspicion of committing a crime. The violence escalated to such an extent that sexual abuse with a baton is being investigated. The victim was left severely traumatized by the ordeal.
The Public Prosecutor's Office deemed the images credible, prompting the initiation of a criminal inquiry handled by the PSP's Criminal Investigation Division in Lisbon. Evidence of torture, along with signs of qualified aggression, embezzlement, and forgery, was uncovered during searches at the officers' workplace, residences, and other relevant locations.
The two officers were formally arrested and are set to appear before a judge at the Lisbon Justice Campus. The case has highlighted nearly a dozen alleged crimes, underscoring the gravity of the incident.
