A dramatic birth unfolded on the IC21 highway in Barreiro this Thursday, as a 33-year-old woman gave birth with the assistance of her own family. The mother and newborn were later transported by ambulance to Garcia de Orta Hospital in Almada, escorted by volunteer firefighters from Barreiro.
Emergency Turned Family Affair
The pregnant woman was en route to the hospital in a light vehicle, accompanied by her husband and mother, after the obstetrics emergency unit in Barreiro was closed. The family attempted to contact INEM (National Institute of Medical Emergency), but communication difficulties hindered immediate assistance. In a subsequent call, the family informed that the baby had been born.
Timeline of Events
- 17:14: The Urgent Patient Orientation Center (CODU) received the first call for a 37-week pregnant woman.
- 17:30: A second call confirmed the baby's birth, prompting the dispatch of an Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicle and an Ambulance.
- 17:49: Barreiro Volunteer Firefighters were alerted and arrived to provide necessary medical assistance to both mother and child.
- 18:13: Clinical data were transmitted to CODU, and the family was escorted to Garcia de Orta Hospital.
The INEM reported challenges in initial communication, with the family disconnecting calls and refusing to answer questions, opting to proceed to the hospital on their own. Despite these hurdles, the quick response of emergency services ensured the safety and health of both mother and baby.
