Pena Viewpoint: A Cliffside Marvel by Pekube
The Pena Viewpoint, a groundbreaking project by the architecture studio Pekube, is set to enhance the visitor experience while honoring the unique character of its coastal environment in Portugal. This minimalist design creates a seamless dialogue between the built structure and the breathtaking rugged landscape.
Located at Ponta da Serreta, a recognized geosite on Terceira Island in the Azores, this viewpoint offers an unparalleled opportunity to observe Portugal’s dramatic coastal scenery. The design emphasizes the site’s spatial uniqueness, providing a safe and comfortable space to enjoy the stunning views that change with the ocean's conditions.
A Contrast with the Volcanic Landscape
The architects at Pekube have envisioned the Pena Viewpoint to starkly contrast with the area’s volcanic rock formations. The pathway leading to the viewpoint narrates the geological history of the region, using locally sourced lava stones, and is designed for accessibility, following an organic path that aligns with a nearby lighthouse.
Midway through the journey, a circular ramp integrates a resting area, allowing visitors to pause and enjoy the forested landscape. The design contrasts the heavy materials of the path with the lightweight structure of the viewpoint, which appears to hover above the cliff edge.
The Innovative Catenary-Shaped Structure
The defining feature of the Pena Viewpoint is its catenary-shaped concrete shell, painted white to contrast with the natural terrain. This innovative design not only provides structural integrity but also creates a weightless appearance. The upward curve of the viewpoint draws visitors forward, framing the stunning ocean view.
The lighting strategy incorporates LED fixtures with solar panels, enhancing safety and atmosphere by casting a soft glow over the pathway and viewpoint, making it an inviting destination even after sunset.
