With the legislative elections just around the corner on May 18, both the Democratic Alliance (AD) and the Socialist Party (PS) are vying to become the party of choice for pensioners, a demographic that makes up about 30% of the electorate.
Luís Montenegro, leader of the AD, is focusing his campaign on increasing the Solidarity Supplement for the Elderly (CSI), proposing an extraordinary bonus and assuring that the right-wing stands firmly with retirees.
On the other hand, Pedro Nuno Santos, the PS's secretary-general, is pushing for changes in the pension update formula, aiming to enhance the lowest pensions. He has also been emphasizing the narrative that the AD intends to privatize Social Security, a claim that has stirred considerable debate.
