A homeless man has been sentenced to pay an €11,000 indemnity to Lisbon's City Council for vandalizing the facade of the City Hall. The incident, which took place in December 2023, involved the man painting the word "genocida" in red, displaying a "Free Palestine" banner, and replacing the city's flag with a Palestinian one.
Carlos Moedas, the Mayor of Lisbon, refrained from commenting on the court's decision, emphasizing respect for judicial rulings but lamenting the irreversible damage to the city's heritage. The cleaning costs were estimated at €3,500, yet the court awarded the council €10,855 in damages, plus a €2,730 fine, totaling over €13,500.
The act was claimed by activists from the Palestine Liberation Collective, Climáximo, and Lisbon's Student Climate Strike, who criticized the trial as "arbitrary." Moedas stressed that "the law is the same for everyone" and highlighted the importance of protecting public heritage from such acts of vandalism.
