Carnival Parade in Funchal
This Carnival Tuesday, as tradition dictates, the Cortejo Trapalhão takes place in Funchal. This satirical parade, part of the Carnival festivities organized by the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture, aims to represent the spontaneous celebrations that occurred on Rua da Carreira in the early 20th century.
The parade is scheduled to start at 4 PM, departing from Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro. It will proceed through the Francisco Sá Carneiro Roundabout, along the Avenida do Mar and the Communities of Madeira (south lane), ultimately reaching the Praça da Autonomia.
The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, will be attending the parade from one of the stands set up along Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro.
Creativity on Display
Participants showcase unlimited creativity, featuring themes ranging from social and political satire to whimsical costumes. Notably, the most original revelers stand a chance to win cash prizes of up to 500 euros.
The participation is open to everyone, both locals and visitors, and can be done individually or in groups across various categories:
- Individual or Pair - Children (prizes between 50 and 100 euros)
- Individual or Pair - Adults (prizes between 75 and 150 euros)
- Group Class - Best Theme (prizes between 300 and 500 euros)
- Group Class - Best Animation (prizes between 300 and 500 euros)
- School Group - Best Animation (prize of 300 euros)
- Solidarity Group - Best Animation (prize of 300 euros)
- King Trapalhão and Travesti (both with a prize of 100 euros)
You can still register for the most genuine parade in Madeira between 2 PM and 3:30 PM at Avenida Sá Carneiro, in front of the Discoteca Vespas. The award ceremony for the Cortejo Trapalhão will take place from 6 PM at the Praça da Restauração stage.
Traffic Changes
Be aware of the following traffic changes from 2 PM to 8 PM due to the Cortejo Trapalhão:
- Traffic interruptions will occur along various routes, including Avenida do Mar and the Sá Carneiro Tunnel.
- Traffic conditions will be altered on several streets, including Rua Carvalho Araújo and Rua do Visconde de Anadia.
- Public transport schedules and alternative routes should be checked on the SIGA website.
Other Carnival Celebrations
Carnival festivities aren't just limited to the center of Funchal. Events such as 'Music at the Monte - Carnival Edition' and the 'Best Costume Contest' organized by the Casa do Povo de São Roque do Faial will also be held. In Calheta, hotels like Saccharum and Calheta Beach will feature exciting programs filled with entertainment.
