Extreme Weather Alerts Across Southern Europe

Popular holiday destinations in Europe, including Greece, Spain, and Portugal, are grappling with extreme heat, leading to severe travel warnings for UK holidaymakers. Recent temperatures have soared to around 40°C, resulting in water shortages, wildfires, and evacuations.

Greece

In Greece, areas are on high alert as intense heat and strong winds have triggered fast-moving wildfires, particularly near Athens. Thousands are being evacuated from homes and holiday accommodations, with dangerous weather conditions expected to persist.

The British Foreign Office has issued warnings to tourists, urging them to follow official updates from @112Greece on X and comply with emergency services' guidance. Flights at Athens Airport continue to operate, but some tourists are stranded awaiting updates.

Portugal

In Portugal, a wildfire is spreading rapidly through northeastern regions, particularly at the Montesinho Natural Park, affecting around 9,000 residents in nearby villages. Nearly 1,000 firefighters were deployed earlier this week to combat another wildfire in southern Portugal that forced the evacuation of approximately 1,400 people.

The UK Foreign Office warns that wildfires can ignite anywhere in Portugal, especially in hot, dry weather. Tourists are advised to familiarize themselves with local safety procedures and contact emergency services at 112 if they encounter a wildfire.

Spain

Spain is also facing oppressive heat, with temperatures exceeding 40°C. The heatwave has prompted authorities to impose water restrictions, urging tourists to use water responsibly. In Majorca, authorities have implemented strict measures including cutting off water supply from 11 PM to 11 AM to conserve resources.

Local councils have banned the use of public water for filling pools and watering gardens, except for purified irrigation. Tourists are encouraged to stay alert and aware of their surroundings, especially in woodland areas.

For the latest updates on the situation, it's crucial for travelers to stay informed and follow the advice of local authorities.
