Portugal's housing crisis worsens as prices double and unconventional rentals emerge
This weekend, protests for housing rights are set to take place across 13 cities in Portugal, highlighting the escalating housing crisis. Activists argue that the situation has deteriorated significantly, with some now charging for bathroom access due to the scarcity of affordable housing.
A broken promise?
Back in April 2018, former Prime Minister António Costa pledged to eliminate all housing shortages by the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April Revolution in 2024. Despite the introduction of various housing policies and strategies since then, the crisis has only deepened. The government's efforts, including the New Generation of Housing Policies and subsequent programs, have failed to curb the rising prices and demand.
The current state
Since Costa's promise seven years ago, housing prices have doubled, pushing many to the brink. The lack of affordable options has led to extreme measures, such as renting out bathrooms, underscoring the severity of the crisis. This weekend's protests aim to draw attention to these issues and demand actionable solutions from the government.
