Portugal is under a yellow weather warning as temperatures are expected to soar above 30°C across most of the mainland, with some areas, particularly in Alentejo, the Tagus Valley, and the Douro Valley, potentially reaching a blistering 40°C. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has extended the yellow warning until Tuesday at 00:00 for 14 districts, including Beja, Braga, and Faro, due to the persistent heat.
Extended Heatwave Conditions
The heatwave is attributed to an intensified anticyclone over the Azores, which is promoting the transport of warm and dry continental air over the Iberian Peninsula. This meteorological phenomenon is expected to keep temperatures significantly above the seasonal average.
Regional Variations
While the interior regions will bear the brunt of the heat, coastal areas may experience some relief thanks to the moderate sea breeze, keeping temperatures slightly below 30°C during the afternoons. However, nighttime will offer little respite, with minimum temperatures not dropping below 20°C in southern regions, the Tagus Valley, and Beira Baixa.
Public Advisory
The IPMA reminds the public that the yellow warning indicates a risk situation for certain weather-dependent activities. Residents and visitors are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during peak hours, and follow local health guidelines to mitigate the effects of the extreme heat.
