Under the newly proposed Nationality Law, approved by the Council of Ministers, the international careers of several Portuguese sports figures would have taken a different path. Footballers Pepe and Deco, for instance, would have had to wait an additional year before debuting for Portugal. Similarly, Pedro Pablo Pichardo would have made his first Olympic jumps under the Portuguese flag just 11 months ago.
This law introduces a new requirement of seven (or 10) years of residency in Portugal, a change that would have significantly impacted the timing of these athletes' contributions to Portuguese sports.
