João Marrana Launches Candidacy for Marvila Parish Council
João Marrana, the candidate from the coalition 'Por Ti, Lisboa' for the Marvila Parish Council, officially presented his candidacy on Friday, September 19, emphasizing a foundation built on the people and local associations. Speaking at the Casa de Pedra restaurant in Parque da Bela Vista, Marrana declared his ambition to make Marvila 100% accessible by 2030.
Key Proposals for Community Empowerment
Marrana's platform includes initiatives such as Neighborhood Assemblies to give residents of municipal neighborhoods a voice, the creation of a Cultural Center, and comprehensive accessibility improvements. He highlighted Marvila's challenges, noting it has Lisbon's highest rates of unemployment and illiteracy, with some of the least qualified professionals in the city.
To address these issues, Marrana plans to partner with local associations to implement qualification programs like 'Marvila Qualifica' and study rooms for all ages. He criticized the current administration for lacking strategy and planning, promising a more coordinated approach without excessive spending.
Focus on Housing and Social Inclusion
Beyond basic aid, Marrana advocates for housing cooperatives to support 'children of the parish,' ensuring generational continuity and community strength. Programs like 'Sentir Marvila' and 'Marvila Valoriza' aim to guide local associations and offer innovative educational opportunities for adults.
Additionally, he proposes establishing a Cultural Center at the Casa dos Direitos Sociais and reclaiming the Palácio da Mitra for a Museum of Marvila's History and Memory, celebrating the parish's identity.
Accessibility and Mobility Commitments
Marrana committed to eliminating architectural barriers, leveraging Marvila's flat terrain for swift progress. With support from the Lisbon City Council and Associação Salvador, he aims to model Marvila as a benchmark for accessibility in Portugal.
Endorsements from Coalition Partners
Candidates from the 'Por Ti, Lisboa' coalition, including Vasco Anjos (Iniciativa Liberal), Vasco Moreira Rato (PSD), and Maria Aldim (CDS), praised Marrana's humanistic approach and experience. They emphasized his ability to address Marvila's diverse needs and strengthen cooperation with the municipality.
Marrana concluded by envisioning a Marvila that is vibrant, just, and respected, where every resident has opportunities and dignity, asserting that 'when Marvila speaks, all of Lisbon will listen.'
