Incident Details
The attic of a building in Lisbon's Rua do Sol a Graça collapsed this Sunday, following a previous incident where the facade had crumbled on September 3. According to information gathered by CM from residents, the collapse occurred around 1:30 PM. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Emergency Response
Firefighters and Civil Protection were on the scene promptly. They assessed the situation and expanded the safety perimeter to ensure public security. Since the initial incident earlier this month, municipal police have been stationed at the location. Civil Protection is scheduled to return on Monday for a new inspection of the building.
Background and Impact
This is an old building that was under renovation. On September 3, part of the facade collapsed around 3:00 AM, displacing 16 people. Eight were allowed to return home the next morning, but eight others were rehoused and remain in accommodations provided by the Lisbon City Council. Although there were no injuries, residents of neighboring properties had to evacuate as a precaution due to unsafe conditions.
Two vehicles were destroyed in the earlier incident, one of which belonged to the construction site. Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas visited the site at the beginning of the month, promising to determine responsibilities.
