Portugal Formally Recognizes Palestinian State, Minister Announces
In a significant development, Portugal's Foreign Affairs Minister Paulo Rangel declared on Sunday that the country has officially recognized the state of Palestine. This announcement was made during a statement at the headquarters of Portugal's permanent mission to the United Nations in New York.
Rangel emphasized that this recognition aligns with a fundamental and constant line of Portuguese foreign policy, underscoring Portugal's commitment to the two-state solution as the only viable path to a just and lasting peace in the region. He called for an urgent ceasefire and condemned the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, including issues of starvation and destruction.
Additionally, Rangel stated that Hamas cannot have any form of control in Gaza or outside it and demanded the immediate release of all hostages. He also criticized the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Portugal's recognition comes alongside other nations such as Britain, Canada, and Australia, marking a coordinated international effort.
