A Historic Mass at the Vatican

During the diocesan mass held at St. Peter's Basilica for the World Youth Day (WYD), a significant moment unfolded as the icons of the journey were passed from Portuguese youth to their Korean counterparts, who will host the event in 2027.

The mass, celebrated on the Solemnity of Christ the King, concluded with an emotional rendition of “Há Pressa no Ar,” the anthem from the Lisbon event in 2023. The Portuguese youth handed over the symbols of the WYD: the Cross and the Icon of Mary, known as Salus Populi Romani.

Papal Message

Pope Francis, during his homily, emphasized that this act is a sign and an invitation for everyone to spread the Gospel across the globe without hesitation. He addressed the Korean youth, saying, "Dear Korean youth, now it’s your turn! Carrying the Cross to Asia, you will announce the love of Christ to all. Have courage!" He urged them to be courageous witnesses of hope in a world that needs it now more than ever.

Delegations Present

About 100 young people from Portugal were present, accompanied by the Patriarch of Lisbon, Dom Rui Manuel Sousa Valério, and Cardinal Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar, the general coordinator of the Lisbon WYD. Alongside them were 100 young Koreans, led by the Archbishop of Seoul, Dom Peter Chung Soon-taek, and Bishop Dom Paul Kyung Sang Lee, the general coordinator for the 2027 edition.

The icons will embark on a pilgrimage through various Asian countries, particularly significant as many are predominantly non-Christian. The hope is for these young people to become "tireless missionaries of joy," encouraging even those who have never participated in a WYD to embark on an inner journey to courageously witness Christ.
