Scorching heat and pollutant emissions have led to alarmingly high ozone concentrations in Lisbon and Amadora, reaching 180 µg/m³, a level that triggers public health warnings. The heatwave persists, with orange alerts issued for most inland districts except Viseu. Beja is expected to hit 43°C, Évora 41°C, and Lisbon 34°C.
According to the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Coordination Commission, ozone exposure can severely affect health, particularly in sensitive groups like children, the elderly, and those with respiratory or heart conditions. Symptoms include eye and respiratory irritation and shortness of breath.
The commission urges the public to limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours to reduce exposure to harmful ozone levels.
