The Judicial Police (PJ) in Lisbon is currently investigating two high-value thefts of sacred art and art objects within the metropolitan area of the capital.
Theft of Azulejos in Mafra
On Thursday, the owners of a property in Gradil, Mafra, reported the theft of high-value azulejos (traditional Portuguese tiles) to the PJ. The theft, which went unnoticed until that day, is believed to have occurred between mid-April and early May. An undetermined number of tiles, both from the facade and interior of the property, were stolen.
Sacred Art Stolen from Lisbon Church
In a separate incident early Friday morning, the PSP was called to the Church of Socorro in Lisbon. The parish priest reported the theft of several sacred art items, including a sacred chalice.
The PJ has visited both sites, collecting evidence to begin their investigations.
