Lisbon's Metro Expands to the Coast: Caparica and Trafaria Get a Subway Boost

The Lisbon Metro is set to expand to the coastal towns of Caparica and Trafaria within the next five to seven years, according to Portugal's Minister of Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz.

This ambitious project, which will add approximately 6.6 kilometers to the current network, will offer a direct connection to river transport, aiming to reduce dependence on private vehicles. This aligns with Portugal's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The project has been met with enthusiasm from both the government and local officials. The Minister highlighted the importance of a unified vision for the development of Lisbon, emphasizing the need to connect both sides of the Tagus River. The project also received strong support from the Mayor of Almada, Inês de Medeiros, who called it a fundamental step in fulfilling a long-held ambition of the municipality.

The extension will not only connect these coastal towns to Lisbon, but also offer a vital link to the rest of the metropolitan area. It will also provide a convenient alternative for commuters and tourists alike, potentially reducing traffic congestion and pollution in the region.

The project is still in its early stages, with studies expected to be completed within the next three years. Once completed, the project will require significant investment, which will be determined during the planning phase. The Minister stressed the importance of a thorough and comprehensive study to ensure the project is implemented effectively and efficiently.

The extension to Caparica and Trafaria represents a major step forward in enhancing Lisbon's public transportation network. It is a testament to the country's commitment to sustainable development and a vision for a more integrated and connected metropolitan area.
