Hundreds gathered in Lisbon this Tuesday, marching from Largo do Chiado to the Assembly of the Republic, calling on the Portuguese government to officially recognize the State of Palestine. The demonstration, under the banner "End the Genocide! Recognize the State of Palestine Now!", was organized by a coalition including the Movement for the Rights of the Palestinian People and Peace in the Middle East (MPPM), the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC), and Project Noise - Youth Association, alongside the CGTP.
Political leaders joined the cause, with notable figures such as PCP's Secretary-General Paulo Raimundo, Bloco de Esquerda's coordinator Mariana Mortágua, and Livre's deputy Jorge Pinto in attendance. The rally highlighted the ongoing conflict's devastating toll, with over 55,300 Palestinian casualties reported by Gaza's Health Ministry since October 2023, the majority being women and children.
The conflict escalated following Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in 1,200 deaths, mostly civilians, and over 250 hostages taken, 53 of whom remain in captivity with uncertain fates. Israel's subsequent military campaign aims to dismantle Hamas, but the humanitarian cost continues to spark international outcry and demonstrations like today's in Lisbon.
