Lisbon's Municipal Council has taken a significant step towards addressing the city's housing crisis by handing over keys to 50 affordable rental homes in the Marvila parish. This initiative, part of a €9.3 million investment, marks a pivotal moment in the city's efforts to provide accessible housing options.
A New Chapter for Families
The homes are located in two new residential blocks in Vale Formoso de Cima, featuring T1, T2, and T3 apartments. Construction began in 2023, with funding partially covered by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). This project is part of a broader municipal plan for the area, which includes another building with 105 units ranging from T0 to T4, currently under construction.
Ceremony of Hope
On July 31, 2025, Lisbon's Mayor, Carlos Moedas, alongside the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, presided over the key-handing ceremony. Moedas emphasized the transformative impact of housing, stating, "Handing over a key is changing a life, it's changing a family." He also highlighted the administration's achievements, with 2,744 homes delivered during his tenure, a stark contrast to the previous decade's stagnation.
Lisbon's Housing Vision
With 12% of its housing stock municipal, Lisbon stands out among European cities. Moedas expressed intentions to increase this percentage, underscoring the importance of continued investment in affordable housing. Meanwhile, Minister Pinto Luz acknowledged the national scale of the housing challenge, with 12,000 homes already delivered and another 8,000 expected by year-end. However, he cautioned against expecting immediate changes in housing prices, urging patience and persistence in tackling the issue.
