Nazaré Beach, a popular spot on Portugal's west coast, faced a severe contamination scare leading to over 100 hospitalizations. The incident, caused by a "technical fault" in the sewage system, resulted in the discharge of contaminated water into the storm drains near the coastline.
Health Emergency Unfolds
By Saturday afternoon, 116 people, including 44 children and 26 adults, were treated for symptoms like vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. The Public Health Unit is still verifying all cases linked to the contamination.
Beach Closure and Reopening
The beach was closed on Friday after reports of bad odors and visible contamination. However, after thorough water analyses confirmed the water's safety, the ban was lifted on Saturday night. Authorities noted the seawater had returned to being clear and transparent.
Mayor's Statement
Nazaré's mayor, Manuel Sequeira, confirmed that the affected individuals had all visited the beach, highlighting the link between the symptoms and the contaminated water.
Nazaré's Popularity
Known for its strong swell, Nazaré is a hotspot for swimming, surfing, and bodyboarding. Nearby Praia do Norte is famed for its massive waves, attracting surfers worldwide.
