The number of hospitalizations due to water contamination at Nazaré Beach has increased to 116, with 72 of those affected being children and adolescents, and 44 adults. Patients exhibited gastrointestinal symptoms caused by a bacteria. Initially, there were reports of transmission among family members of those initially contaminated, but this information was later contradicted by another source.
Public Health Unit continues to monitor the situation, with ongoing epidemiological investigation. Notably, 60% of the contaminated individuals are female, and 40% are male.
Ban on swimming was lifted this Sunday after authorities confirmed the water was clear and free of macroscopic organic constituents. The contamination was linked to a technical failure in the stormwater drainage system, which caused unusual runoff and foul odors near the coastline on Friday. Although the issue was promptly addressed, water tests were conducted to ensure safety.
