More than a hundred police officers gathered in Lisbon to stage a protest, voicing their demands for improved working conditions and compensation.
Gilberto Alves, the deputy president of the SPP (Police Union), highlighted that the protest centers on three fundamental points: the base salary, supplements that haven't been revised since 2010, and pre-retirement options.
He criticized the government, stating, "The Government is blocking the exit of police officers into pre-retirement," and expressed disappointment that these issues are not addressed in the State Budget for 2026. Alves also noted that the minister has yet to speak on this pressing matter.
Tiago Fernandes, vice-president of Sinapol (another police union), emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying it's time to "take to the streets to urge the Government to start negotiations, not just discussions."
Fernandes argued that the government should have already presented a formal proposal to the unions outlining its plans for the police force, underscoring the need for concrete action rather than mere dialogue.
