At the start of Saturday morning, by 8 am, 985 firefighters were battling the fire in Piódão, in the municipality of Arganil (district of Coimbra), which continues to be the most concerning. The fire in Sátão (district of Viseu), mobilized 959 operational personnel at the same time.
Other major fires still ongoing this morning: Trancoso (which merged with the one in Sátão), Lousã, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, and Sabugal.
Large fires under control: Vila Real, Portalegre, and Tabuaço.
Other news from the last 24 hours:
- The first death of this wave of fires was confirmed: Carlos Dâmaso, former president of the parish council of Vila Franca do Deão, died fighting the flames in Pêra do Moço, in Guarda.
- The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, interrupted his vacation in the Algarve.
- Portugal requested four planes under the European Civil Protection Mechanism. It will receive, for now, two planes from Sweden.
A fire that broke out around 5 am this morning in a room at the Bom Samaritano nursing home, run by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Mirandela, killed six residents and seriously injured five others.
According to the provider of Misericórdia de Mirandela, Adérito Gomes, the fire is believed to have started in an "anti-bedsore mattress," in a room with three residents who ended up dying. Three other residents died due to smoke inhalation and respiratory problems. The fire is, therefore, not related to the current wave of forest fires.
