In an exclusive interview with RTP, Prime Minister and PSD leader Luís Montenegro paid tribute to Francisco Pinto Balsemão, highlighting his profound impact on both the party and the nation. Montenegro emphasized that Balsemão left indelible marks and was one of the key inspirations behind the PPD's identity and ideological framework.
Montenegro particularly praised Balsemão's "cosmopolitan" and "universalist" political vision, citing specific contributions such as the 1982 constitutional revision and his crucial role in Portugal's accession to the European Economic Community (EEC).
According to the Prime Minister, Balsemão's leadership anticipated one of Portugal's most prosperous decades, which later unfolded under Cavaco Silva's governance. Montenegro asserted that Balsemão deserves recognition for helping build the "foundations" of the current political regime.
The Prime Minister and the President of the Republic arrived together at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon on Wednesday evening to attend Balsemão's wake, which was open to the public. A mass is scheduled for Thursday at 13:00 at the monastery, followed by a private funeral reserved for family members.
