Major Shakeup at Lisbon's Public Transport Company
Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas has decided not to renew the administration of Carris, the city's public transport company, following a damning report about the Gloria elevator accident that claimed 16 lives last September.

The decision was confirmed to RTP by sources within the municipal executive and has already been implemented by Carlos Moedas, who holds oversight responsibility for the company as President of Lisbon City Council.
Report Reveals Critical Failures
This dramatic move comes just one day after the release of an investigative report that identified serious failures leading to the Gloria elevator accident. The report from the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Accidents with Aircraft and Railway Accidents (GPIAAF) specifically highlighted multiple deficiencies in Carris's processes for cable acquisition, acceptance, and installation.
Political Pressure Mounts
On Tuesday, Socialist councilors at Lisbon City Council demanded the resignation of Carris's administration, calling the report's conclusions "very serious." The current Carris administration, led by President Pedro Bogas, took office in 2022 and was scheduled to complete its term this year.
Company Response and Internal Changes
In response to the preliminary report, Carris stated it is still determining responsibilities and revealed that the Director of Electric Mode Maintenance had already been dismissed. The company has indicated that some decisions under investigation may date back to previous administrations, while the city council has emphasized technical causes behind the tragic incident.
