The Portuguese government has decided to extend the alert status until August 13 due to the high risk of wildfires across the country, fueled by the expected high temperatures in the coming days. This announcement was made by the Minister of Internal Administration, Maria Lúcia Amaral, following the Council of Ministers meeting this Thursday.
In addition to the extension, the government is exploring stricter penalties for crimes related to forest fires. This move comes after the Prime Minister's promise last September to take a hard line against arsonists.
The Council of Ministers also resolved to resume the Forest Intervention Plan 2025-2050, initially presented in March when the government was in a caretaker role. This plan aims to address long-term strategies for forest management and wildfire prevention.
