The Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the demolition of dozens of homes in the Talude Militar neighborhood, Loures, Lisbon district. More than 160 people were evicted.
The General Prosecutor's Office (PGR) confirmed on Wednesday, July 16, that it opened an inquiry into the demolition process of precarious houses in the Talude Militar neighborhood, ordered by the local council.
"Following the information disclosed in recent days by the media, the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Lisbon North district decided to open an investigation," replied an official PGR source to RTP.
The Loures Council began on Monday an operation to demolish 64 precarious homes in Talude Militar, where 161 people live. On that day alone, 51 houses were demolished, and on Tuesday, four more were torn down.
The operation was eventually suspended after the Lisbon Administrative Court accepted a precautionary measure filed by a lawyer representing 14 residents of the neighborhood and decreed a provisional suspension of the demolitions.
These demolitions are taking place without any housing alternative for the residents. The Loures Council only ensures the payment of one month's deposit and another month's rent "with support for renting in the housing market."
The families whose homes were demolished were directed to a reception center or a hotel unit. There are also families who have been sleeping in tents or outdoors for two nights, according to a municipal deputy.
