A large-scale wildfire with multiple fronts has mobilized 350 emergency personnel and over 100 vehicles in Sabrosa, Vila Real district, as of Wednesday evening.
The fire, which saw seven aircraft deployed during the afternoon, is being fueled by strong winds in the region. So far, around 20 people have been evacuated due to intense smoke, though no homes are currently at risk, despite the fire raging near several villages.
"We're mobilizing all possible resources to fight the fire. The wind is very intense, with completely irregular direction, [and the fire] is currently spreading in multiple directions," said José Barros, commander of the Sabrosa Fire Department, in statements to Lusa news agency during the afternoon.
The fire broke out shortly after 1:00 PM on Wednesday in Feitas and later spread to the village of Souto Maior.
Speaking to TSF in the late afternoon, Helena Lapa, mayor of Sabrosa, indicated that the situation seemed close to being under control but acknowledged that risks to the population remained due to projections caused by strong winds and the multiple fire fronts.
