Two British tourists, aged 27 and 29, tragically drowned after jumping into their apartment swimming pool following a night out in Albufeira, Portugal. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with both men pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services who arrived around 4:30am.
Investigation Underway
Police are investigating whether the men were able to swim, with initial theories suggesting that alcohol consumption and inability to swim may have contributed to the tragedy. The Policia Judiciaria has been called in to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, though they are not currently being treated as suspicious.
A Growing Concern
This incident adds to a series of tragic events involving British tourists in Albufeira, a popular party resort in the Algarve. Recent months have seen several fatalities, including a 21-year-old found dead at the bottom of a set of steps and a 38-year-old Scottish tourist who fell down a cliff after a night out.
Albufeira's Changing Reputation
Albufeira is increasingly known for its vibrant nightlife, shifting from a family-friendly destination to a party hotspot. Local authorities are considering measures to curb public drinking and indecency, including fines for walking in swimwear on the streets.
Albufeira, a popular destination for British tourists, is facing challenges as it transitions into a party town.
