Sardine fishing using seine nets will be prohibited in the Algarve from Saturday to Monday, according to a note from the Directorate-General for Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services (DGRM).
The ban on sardine fishing applies in the jurisdiction area of the port captaincies of Olhãopesca and Barlapescas, from 18:00 on Saturday (June 21) to 18:00 on Monday (June 23) – covering the captaincies of Olhão, Faro, Tavira, Vila Real de Santo António, Lagos, and Portimão, as stated in the document.
Seine net fishing involves using a long and high 'wall' of net to encircle the fish, in this case sardines, from the sides and below, reducing their ability to escape.
The DGRM is a central service of the direct administration of the State, with administrative autonomy, aimed at developing maritime safety and services, implementing fishing policies, and preserving resources.
