A 29-year-old civil engineer, suspected of a gruesome crime involving qualified homicide, corpse desecration, and possession of a prohibited weapon, has been placed in preventive detention. The incident occurred close to Lisbon's Rossio area, behind the Coliseum, late Tuesday into Wednesday.
The suspect, a foreign national, allegedly decapitated a 34-year-old man, also a foreigner, whom he met through a dating app. Despite not providing statements in court, the judge deemed the evidence strong enough for preventive detention, citing a flight risk. The suspect reportedly lived in a rented room in Lisbon and had defensive wounds but no signs of personality disorders or mental anomalies. A kitchen knife believed to be the murder weapon was seized.
The victim's torso was found in Pátio Salema, Lisbon, early Wednesday, with a hat covering the decapitation site. In a bizarre twist, the suspect voluntarily delivered the victim's head to Hospital de São José, wrapped in aluminum foil, on Thursday, leading to his arrest. The Judiciary Police (PJ) confirmed the arrest, stating the crime was motivated by personal reasons, despite the brief acquaintance between the two. No evidence links the crime to drug trafficking or use.
