Serious Train Accident in Odemira

A 12-year-old boy was severely injured after being struck by a train on the Linha do Sul in the municipality of Odemira. The incident occurred yesterday, and the child was airlifted to Hospital de Santa Maria in Lisbon, as reported by the Civil Protection.

According to statements made to the Lusa agency, a source from the Sub-Regional Command of Emergency and Civil Protection of Alentejo Litoral indicated that medical personnel stabilized the child at the scene. At 19:44, a helicopter from the National Institute of Medical Emergency took off to transport him to the hospital.

Railway Operations Restored

The same source noted that railway traffic in that section of the Linha do Sul, near Luzianes-Gare, was restored by 19:15. A representative from Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) confirmed that the circulation in the area, which had been suspended between Santa Clara-Sabóia and Luzianes, resumed around 19:00.

Incident Details

The alert for the train accident was raised at 17:29. It was clarified that the victim was with his father near a bridge on the railway, approximately one kilometer past the level crossing. Initially, the IP had mentioned that railway operations in this section were halted since 17:10 due to an incident at kilometer 246, but did not specify it was a train collision.

To respond to the accident, 12 personnel were deployed, supported by four vehicles from the fire department, GNR, and INEM, including a helicopter based in the Algarve.
