Agroinovar Conference Highlights Agricultural Potential in the Algarve

The recent Agroinovar conference, held in Loulé, emerged as a crucial gathering for the agricultural sector in the Algarve. Key figures from the region's agricultural community, including Miguel Vieira Lopes (AGROGES), Joel Guerreiro (ASCAL), José Oliveira (AlgarOrange), Afonso Nascimento (FEDAGRI), Nuno Serra (CONFAGRI CCRL), and Luís Ribeiro (novobanco), came together to discuss the future of agriculture.

The Call for Unity and Stronger Public Policies

Nuno Serra, Secretary-General of the National Confederation of Agricultural Cooperatives and Agricultural Credit of Portugal (CONFAGRI), emphasized the need for greater unity among agricultural stakeholders and reinforced the importance of public policies that support production, enhance local products, and lower operational costs. He stated, "The first major challenge is being overcome when the region begins to speak with one voice."

Addressing Regional Asymmetries

Despite its potential, the Algarve faces internal inequalities that hinder effective policy implementation. Serra pointed out that local knowledge is crucial for crafting realistic agricultural strategies. He warned, "Without adequate public policies, water alone is insufficient." The efficient use of water resources emerged as a critical theme during the discussions.

Promoting Local Products and Competitiveness

The Algarve's diverse agricultural production was highlighted as a strength, with Serra advocating for increased promotion of local products and consumer education on choosing national goods. However, competition from countries like Spain presents significant challenges, with local farmers facing high costs for energy and supplies. Serra called for public policies that would alleviate these burdens and promote investment in agriculture.

Enhancing National Production

Serra also stressed the necessity of boosting national production to lessen dependence on imports. He stated, "If we export a lot but produce little, we will have to import more." The government must play a pivotal role in promoting domestic production and educating consumers about the superiority of local products.

In conclusion, Serra believes that the Algarve is poised for agricultural success, but achieving this requires ongoing commitment, investment, and a concerted effort to uplift local products and producers. He urged for political pressure to ensure that necessary changes are implemented effectively.
