Worker’s Day Celebrations Across Portugal
This Thursday, the Worker’s Day is celebrated nationwide, with the CGTP and UGT union confederations organizing demonstrations and initiatives aimed at valuing workers.
The March in Lisbon
At around 3:30 PM, hundreds began to march up Avenida Almirante Reis towards Alameda Afonso Henriques in Lisbon, marking the Worker’s Day. Various union movements participated, showcasing banners, slogans, and chants. Political parties such as PCP, BE, Livre, and PAN were also present.
Historical Context
Fifty-one years ago, the 1st of May celebrations in Portugal followed closely after the April 25th Revolution, leading to a massive public demonstration. Across the country, hundreds of thousands took to the streets expressing their joy and demands, including the "right to strike", "end the war now", and "return of soldiers".
