A devastating wildfire swept through the slopes near the villages of Sirarelhos, Gontães, Vilarinho, and Vila Cova in Vila Real, leading to the evacuation of dozens of residents. The fire, which began late Saturday night, quickly spread due to strong winds, threatening the small community of Vila Cova and eventually crossing into the neighboring municipality of Mondim de Basto.
Pedro Diniz, a local resident, was seen atop a tractor trailer, using a water tank to wet the ground near the fire line in an effort to protect his land. The fire's rapid advancement forced authorities to take precautionary measures, including the evacuation of vulnerable populations from Vila Cova.
The incident not only posed a significant threat to the local communities but also disrupted a planned festival in the area, highlighting the unpredictable nature of wildfires and their impact on rural life.
