Tourism Trends in the Algarve
The number of tourists in the Algarve continues to grow, despite rising prices and a decrease in purchasing power. This upward trend, although slight, keeps hoteliers optimistic. "The Algarve is the top tourist destination for Portuguese people," emphasizes Hélder Martins, president of the Algarve Hotels and Tourist Enterprises Association (AHETA), noting that July saw a 7% increase in bed occupancy compared to the same month last year. However, in August, occupancy in traditional accommodation fell by 0.5%.
Environmental Impact
Globally, the tourist season's balance is positive, though very modest. Meanwhile, waste production in July and August rose by approximately 2-3%, highlighting environmental challenges amid tourism growth.
