Amadeu Guerra's Commitment to Independence
Amadeu Guerra, who succeeds Lucília Gago as the head of the Procuradoria-Geral da República (PGR), was inaugurated this Saturday at the Palácio de Belém. During his acceptance speech, Guerra emphasized that there are "red lines" he will not tolerate, particularly regarding any amendments to the Statute of the Public Ministry that violate the Constitution and its autonomy and independence.
Guerra expressed his general opposition to legislative changes made hastily in response to specific cases, warning that such actions can lead to unforeseen consequences. He stressed the importance of careful consideration regarding the effects of any legal modifications on the future of the justice system.
His primary focus will be on the recovery of assets in corruption cases, which he declared a priority for his administration. He also highlighted the need for more involvement from the Judicial Police (PJ) in investigations, aiming for a more robust approach to tackling corruption in Portugal.
