Angolan comedian Gilmário Vemba, alongside Portuguese Hugo Sousa and Brazilian Murilo Couto, were unexpectedly denied entry into Mozambique, leading to the cancellation of their scheduled performance in Maputo. The incident occurred after their arrival at Maputo International Airport, where they were held without clear explanation.
The group, part of the comedy ensemble Tons de Comédia, was set to perform at the China Mozambique Cultural Centre. Despite having a full house, the show was abruptly canceled. A source close to the production revealed that the comedians were detained at the airport after their flight from Luanda, where they had performed the previous night.
According to a statement from the group, they were initially approached by an immigration officer who promised priority processing due to their imminent show. However, upon reaching the immigration desk, they were asked for cultural activity visas—a requirement they believed only applied to Couto, as the Brazilian member. Despite providing the necessary documentation in advance, the group received no response from authorities.
The situation escalated when the immigration service, citing "superior orders," refused their entry. The comedians were told they would have to wait until a return flight to Angola became available, which wasn't until Tuesday. With their return to Portugal scheduled for Monday, the group requested temporary entry as tourists to at least leave the airport for a meal and hotel stay, but this was denied.
Venâncio Mondlane, a Mozambican political figure, suggested the incident had political motivations, citing Vemba's support for his campaign. Mondlane, who disputes the results of Mozambique's 2024 elections, claimed the comedians' treatment was linked to their political affiliations.
The event highlights ongoing tensions in Mozambique, where post-election protests and clashes have led to hundreds of deaths. The comedians' ordeal underscores the challenges artists face when navigating international travel and political sensitivities.
