Overview
On Tuesday, the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP) decided to archive the investigation concerning the operation launched by agents of the Security Information Service (SIS) to recover a computer from Frederico Pinheiro, the former aide to ex-Minister João Galamba. This decision came after determining there was insufficient evidence regarding the alleged crimes.
Key Findings
A statement from the Department of Criminal Investigation and Action (DIAP) in Lisbon indicated that the investigation failed to substantiate claims of abuse of power, threats, or coercion. The MP noted, "From the actions taken, it was concluded there was insufficient evidence for the verification of the investigated crimes."
Background of the Case
The inquiry was initiated following allegations against Frederico Pinheiro, who had previously been constituted as an accused on July 16 and was subject to searches by the Judiciary Police. The case involved allegations of physical violence within the Ministry of Infrastructure, along with the theft of a laptop after Pinheiro's dismissal, which escalated when the SIS's intervention in the recovery of the computer was reported.
On May 2, 2023, João Galamba submitted his resignation to the then Prime Minister, citing the need for institutional tranquility, a resignation that was not accepted by António Costa. This incident sparked a public divergence between President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister António Costa regarding Galamba's position in the government.
