Lisbon's residents are taking a stand against the escalating issues of noise, insecurity, dirtiness, and urban licensing in the city. Over a dozen associations and citizen movements have formed the Plataforma Lisboa to demand that public entities exercise their powers effectively.
Key concerns highlighted include:
- Intolerable noise levels from entertainment activities.
- Growing citizen insecurity and increase in both major and minor crimes.
- Public spaces turning into open-air bars, with alcohol consumption and drug use in plain sight.
Magda Costa from Aqui Mora Gente shared how the Cais do Sodré area has become an "open-air disco", influencing other parts of the city. The platform criticizes the lack of action from entities like the Lisbon City Council and ASAE in enforcing legal obligations regarding noise and commercial activity supervision.
Paula Teixeira da Cruz, a former PSD deputy, has joined the platform to provide legal support pro bono, emphasizing that public entities must fulfill their duties to ensure basic rights like safe movement in the city.
The platform plans to dialogue with public entities but is prepared to take legal action if necessary, holding them accountable for omissions in public functions. A meeting has been requested with the Lisbon Mayor, among others, to address these pressing issues.
