The Judicial Police (PJ) conducted searches at the Oeiras Municipal Chamber as part of an investigation into potential crimes including malfeasance, passive and active corruption, economic participation in business, abuse of powers, and violation of urban planning rules.
In a statement, the PJ confirmed the raids at the Oeiras Municipal Chamber and "in companies within the tourism sector", aiming to "gather documentary evidence" to advance and conclude the ongoing investigations as swiftly as possible.
According to RTP sources, suspicious bank transfers exceeding five million euros, made through a municipal company, are under scrutiny. The suspicions reportedly involve contracts between the Oeiras municipality, led by Isaltino Morais, and the company Municípia (a cartography and information systems firm), in which the municipality holds shares.
The main suspect is the general director of Municípia, with the PJ also searching the home of António Fernandes.
Oeiras' mayor claims he "learned about the raids through the media" and is unaware of the specific suspicious transfers. However, given the amount involved, Morais believes the investigation is linked to business dealings in Nampula, Mozambique.
Morais assured that following "denunciations and news reports" about two years ago, the municipality "commissioned an external audit" of these dealings. The audit reportedly found "some formal issues" but no "illegalities".
Additionally, the PJ executed search warrants in the Grândola Municipal Chamber, further expanding the scope of this investigation.
