The Government of the Azores has announced a mandatory closure of schools and public services on seven islands for a 24-hour period, from 6 PM on Thursday, September 25, 2025, to 6 PM on Friday, September 26, 2025. This decision comes as Cyclone Gabrielle approaches the archipelago, posing significant risks.
Red Alert Issued for Western and Central Groups
According to regional leader José Manuel Bolieiro, the islands under the red alert include those in the Western and Central groups. The alert is due to forecasts of heavy precipitation, strong winds, and rough seas, expected to intensify from Thursday night. Bolieiro stated, "I signed an order today determining the closure of all public services and organisms located in these islands during this period."
Affected Islands and Groups
The Central group encompasses the islands of Terceira, Graciosa, Pico, Faial, and São Jorge, while the Western group includes Flores and Corvo. Residents are urged to take precautions as the cyclone brings potential hazards.
