Why Alentejo is Portugal's Most Underrated Region
I've visited Portugal over a dozen times, exploring everything from bustling cities to quaint villages. While the entire country is amazing, I always find myself drawn back to the Alentejo region, a vast and underrated area stretching from the Atlantic coast to the Spanish border. It's the largest province in Portugal, offering a diverse landscape of vineyards, walled hilltop villages, forests, olive groves, and more.

Key Attractions in Alentejo
- Alqueva Lake: The largest man-made lake in Western Europe, it's breathtaking with hidden bays and inlets. Nearby, Amieira River Beach is perfect for sunbathing, and Amieira Marina offers kayak and paddleboard rentals. I often stay at Montimerso SkyScape Country House for stunning lake views.
- Moura: A charming small city with narrow streets lined with white-washed homes and colorful flower pots. Jardim Doutor Santiago is a beautiful garden near a historic castle, featuring ferns, cascading water, and panoramic views of olive groves and the Alqueva dam.
- Quinta do Quetzal: An estate with a restaurant, art center, and vineyard views. The gallery hosts unique exhibitions, and the restaurant serves delicious food and wine with scenic backdrops.
- Comporta Area: Comprising seven villages, this coastal region is ideal in spring or fall for its mild weather and uncrowded beaches. Highlights include Pego's sand dunes with wildflowers, Carvalhal for surfing, and Carrasqueira's wooden jetties for stunning sunrises and sunsets.
- Porto Covo: Known for the Fisherman's Trail, a 12-mile hike along clifftops connecting to Vila Nova de Milfontes. Buizinhos Beach is my favorite spot for relaxing after a hike, with crystal-clear waters and salt air.
Each visit to Alentejo reveals new wonders, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic Portuguese experiences away from the crowds.
