Man Dies in Crawler Machine Accident During Firefighting in Mirandela
A 75-year-old man has died while battling a wildfire in Mirandela, Bragança district. According to SIC Notícias, the victim was operating a crawler machine when he fell, resulting in his death.
Commander Paulo Santos of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection stated to Lusa news agency that the man was working for a private company contracted by the Mirandela municipality and died just before midnight.
In response, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has expressed his condolences to the family of the "Mirandela operational" in a note on the Presidency's website, extending sympathies to the municipality as well.
This marks the third death linked to the intense wildfires that have been raging since the beginning of the month. Last Friday, a 43-year-old former mayor of Vila Franca do Deão in Guarda died fighting the flames, and on Sunday, a firefighter from Covilhã died in a traffic accident while en route to a fire in Fundão.
Funerals for the two previous victims were held on Tuesday, attended by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Internal Administration, though their presence was met with some disapproval.
Currently, over 300 firefighters and 107 ground vehicles are deployed to combat the Mirandela fire.
