The Minister of Education, Fernando Alexandre, has clarified that sexuality education will continue to be part of the citizenship and development discipline, despite recent controversies. The minister addressed concerns during a meeting with school directors nationwide, emphasizing that the removal of sexuality education content 'is not true' and that these topics 'remain present in the discipline'.
Fernando Alexandre criticized the misinterpretation of the proposed curriculum changes, explaining that the presented document outlined essential learnings, not the complete curriculum. He stressed the importance of structuring the citizenship discipline to ensure uniformity in teaching, moving away from an ad hoc approach. 'No theme will be removed from the program. They will simply be structured,' he stated.
A significant concern for the minister is the lack of trained teachers for this discipline. Alexandre highlighted the need for teacher training to effectively deliver the curriculum once the new national strategy for citizenship education is published.
A public consultation on the National Strategy for Citizenship Education and the Essential Learnings of the Citizenship and Development discipline is currently underway. However, technical issues have plagued several Ministry of Education websites, including the Directorate-General for Education's page hosting the consultation. The minister acknowledged these challenges and suggested the consultation period might be extended to ensure no one is disadvantaged.
