Portugal's Alarming Stomach Cancer Statistics
Portugal stands out among Western European countries with the worst indicators for stomach cancer, with particularly high incidence rates in the Northern region of the country.
The Shocking Numbers
According to data from Globocan, which integrates information from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, Portugal recorded more than 18,000 new cases in 2022 and approximately 11,700 deaths. This translates to 30 people losing their lives every single day to this devastating disease.
Dietary Risk Factors Highlighted
As World Digestive Cancer Day was observed this Tuesday, Europacolon Portugal issued a stark warning about dietary habits that contribute to this health crisis. The organization specifically identified high-salt diets, consumption of processed meats, and traditional smoked meat products (fumeiro) as significant risk factors for developing stomach cancer.
The Northern region's particularly high incidence suggests that regional dietary patterns may be playing a crucial role in Portugal's elevated stomach cancer rates compared to other Western European nations.
