Portugal is witnessing a sharp rise in hate speech, particularly targeting migrants, Roma, Black individuals, and the LGBTQ+ community, with instances of violence linked to neo-Nazi groups. The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), an independent human rights monitoring body of the Council of Europe, has expressed concern over these developments. In its latest monitoring report on Portugal, released this Wednesday, ECRI calls on national authorities to conduct effective investigations into all hate-motivated incidents, ensuring they receive the attention they deserve.
Key incidents include the involvement of neo-Nazi groups in violent acts, underscoring the urgent need for Portugal to enhance police responses to hate crimes. The report emphasizes the importance of addressing and combating hate speech and violence to protect vulnerable communities and uphold human rights.
